Balanced Feeding for Fruits and Vegetables

As a fruit and vegetable grower, you know quality is just as important as weight when your produce hits the grocer’s shelves. Fruits and vegetables need a proper balance of nutrients to grow and have the quality to look visually appealing to the buyer. Use of the appropriate Rainbow Plant Food can help you achieve this complete nutritional balance.

There are 17 essential nutrients required for plant growth: carbon (C), hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sulfur (S), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), boron (B), molybdenum (Mo), chlorine (Cl) and nickel (Ni). Of these 17, all except carbon, hydrogen and oxygen are derived from the soil. When the soil cannot supply the level of nutrient required for adequate growth, supplemental fertilizer applications become necessary.

All fruit and vegetable crops are different, but especially in the early stages, high-yielding crops require large amounts of potassium to stimulate root growth. Too much of this nutrient, however, can restrict plant absorption of magnesium, which is essential for chlorophyll production. Every granule of Rainbow supplies a balance of potassium and magnesium and includes zinc, manganese, calcium, and boron to promote cell elasticity and plump fruits.

Rainbow fertilizers use potassium sulfate so are safe for those crops with sensitivity to chloride. While chloride is an essential nutrient for all plants, some fruits and vegetables may be sensitive to high rates of chloride that might accompany the high rates of potassium needed.  The low chloride content of Rainbow makes it ideal for those sensitive crops.
